Cops Cheer As Trump Suggests Officers Use More Violence

President Donald Trump visited Long Island on Friday to tout his administration's commitment to cracking down on the MS-13 street gang that authorities have blamed for a recent string of brutal murders.

"Law enforcement officers are trained to treat all individuals, whether they are a complainant, suspect, or defendant, with dignity and respect", stated the organization.

"I said please don't be too nice - like when you guys put somebody in the vehicle and you're protecting their head ..."

"Like when you guys put somebody in the auto and you're protecting their head".

"This country is tired of the type of policing that Trump espouses, having seen over and over again that it only makes it harder for police to investigate and solve crime", he said. "Totally protect the criminal, not the officers. Not the officers. You do something wrong, you're in more jeopardy than they are", he added. "If you begin to play judge and jury and allow people to get hurt, through your negligence or through your intentions, you are violating the law and you're no bigger than the people that are out there breaking the law intentionally". DeRay McKesson, a prominent voice in the Black Lives Matter movement who made an unsuccessful bid to become mayor of Baltimore, pointed to the reaction of the law enforcement officials Trump spoke to. Those comments also received a lengthy applause. "I said, you can take the hand away, okay?" Zeke Johnson, the senior director of programs at Amnesty International USA noted Trump's "inflammatory and hateful speech will only escalate tensions between police and communities". "And we're backing you 100 percent".

Police can not treat every community like an invading army, and encouraging violence by police is irresponsible and reprehensible. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has pushed for a crackdown on MS-13, which has led to hundreds of arrests in Suffolk County. Sessions has had the Justice Department pull back from "pattern or practice" investigations that look into widespread constitutional abuses in police departments.

Trump's audience, mostly police officers from the Suffolk County Police Department, cheered Trump's praise for police brutality.

The police department in Gainesville, Florida issued an even harsher condemnation, claiming that the President "endorsed and condoned police brutality".

"They're animals. We can not tolerate as a society the spilling of innocent، young، wonderful، vibrant people".

Trump's speech was criticized by Professor Karen Pita Loor of Boston University School of Law who told LawNewz.com: "I'm not sure that's what his supporters meant by a law-and-order president".

MacGillis wasn't the only one to immediately condemn the President's words.
