Gainesville police reject President's Trumps remarks about treatment of suspects

During a speech he gave at Suffolk County Community College in NY, on Friday, the President made comments implying that he was in support of unnecessary police force. "I said, 'Please don't be too nice'".

He also said that there was no need for police to use their hands to protect the heads of individuals under arrest as they were put into cars. "I said you can take the hand away, okay?"

The Suffolk County Police Department said in a statement after Trump's speech that it has strict rules and procedures about how prisoners should be handled.

While speaking about the administration's efforts to take on worldwide gangs to law enforcement officers at the Suffolk County Community College in Long Island, New York, Trump joked that officers should be rougher with suspects and suggested letting them hit their heads on police cars.

The Gainesville Police Department, and an officer in the department, also tweeted condemnations of the remarks. "Like, don't hit their head and they've just killed somebody". "Police misconduct or acts of brutality is not a joking matter".

Prosecutors argued that Gray should not have been arrested in the first place and that he was given a "rough ride" in the back of a police transport.

The comment elicited laughter and applause from some, including uniformed law enforcement, in the audience.

Rikers Island prison on lockdown after an inmate goes missing
A source tells NBC 4 New York Rikers has not passed a physical security audit by the state in the past 10 years. The New York Times reports helicopters searched the waters while K-9 units searched on land.

The department issued the statement after Trump told police officers "don't be too nice" during a speech that was largely about combating criminal gangs.

"As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners", it said on Twitter.

And as the President noted in a recent interview with The New York Times, "there are very few Republicans in Baltimore, if any". Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously, ' the Friday afternoon tweet read. In a statement Friday, the group did not specifically mention Trump by name but appeared to respond to his speech by stressing the importance of treating all people, including suspects, with respect. "This is the bedrock principle behind the concepts of procedural justice and police legitimacy".

"This led to protests, a riot and an unprecedented two-year spike in violence that now has the city on track for close to 400 homicides this year, more than NY, which is 14 times larger". "As a police department we are committed to helping people, not harming them", Evans said.

Maya Wiley, the chairwoman of the city's Civilian Complaint Review Board, condemned Mr. Trump's speech, saying in a statement that it was "shameful, risky and damages the progress our city has made toward improving police-community relations".

His comments encouraging violence did not go down well with the people they were directed at.

Trump made the remarks Friday while speaking to law enforcement officers on Long Island.
