Panic Ensues After A Powerful Earthquake Jolts Greek Island, Killing Two Tourists

Israelis holidaying on the Greek island of Kos were shaken by a massive natural disaster Friday which killed two tourists, left over 300 hurt across the region and sparked fears of a tsunami.

Becky Kelly was with her friend Rachel Mawdsley, both from Poulton, in the popular tourist destination when the 6.7 magnitude quake struck just off the coast, between the Greek island and Turkey. Buildings with damage included the old mosque and a 14th-century fortress at the entrance to the main port.

He added: "When we got downstairs we just kept getting mini quakes all through the night until about 9am but people are still thinking they can feel them just now". Multiple tremors continue to shake the epicenter between Turkey and the Greek Islands.

ABTA, the association of tour operators, said its members are working with customers and staff on the ground and have not reported any casualties or injuries affecting United Kingdom holidaymakers.

Kos Town was the worst hit area, where two male tourists from Sweden and Turkey were killed after being crushed under a collapsed ceiling at the White Corner Club.

Tourists staying on the Greek islands and in Turkey have been told to expect travel disruption, while the clear up mission has begun after the impact of the vibrations caused cracks to walls and flooding in some areas.

A spokesman for a state hospital in the Cretan city of Iraklio said they had received four patients, including two people in critical condition, one with a head injury and one who had to have a leg amputated due to injury.

It caused extensive damage to Kos' historical centre.

A strong quake of magnitude 6.6 R and 10 km depth occurred in the Aegean Sea near the south-western coast of Turkey and north-eastern coast of Kos island (Greece) on 20 July at 22.31 UTC. People were found resting on sunbeds in the town square and on beaches, or huddled around tables at the outdoor cafes.
