Twitter says flat user growth is 'seasonal,' but it can't explain why

An investigation into the company's first quarter 2017 financial report and comparison with Twitter's official second-quarter results, however, reveals a more embarrassing fact: the number of monthly active Twitter users remained the same in both: 328 million.

In America, home of one of Twitter's most notorious users, monthly active users fell by two million, while worldwide users grew, the company said in its letter to shareholders.

In the United States, Twitter's average monthly active users fell to 68 million from 70 million in the first quarter. Growth for that cohort was up 12 percent in Q2 over the same quarter last year, and is showing early signs of another double-digit year-over-year jump in Q3. This compares with a quarterly GAAP net loss of $107 million, representing a GAAP net margin of (18%) and GAAP diluted EPS of ($0.15) in the same period a year ago. We'll see if Twitter can work those issues out as we continue to make our way through the fiscal year, so stay tuned. According to Reuters, analysts had predicted Twitter would bring in only $536 million in revenue, but the site still pulled in $574 million for the quarter.

For a company that just reported forty-five percent sales growth year-on-year, that is a bargain.

Twitter beat analysts' expectations on EPS (non-GAAP) at 12 cents per share, compared to a predicted 5 cents per share. Not only was this metric short of the 329 million expected, but it's unchanged from the prior quarter. USA advertising revenue also fell 7% to $335 million as it struggles to compete with Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Facebook Inc., which account for most of the growth in digital advertising.

At present, Twitter sports a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

"Our focus has been on daily active usage", Anthony Noto, Twitter's chief operating officer, said on the call.

Twitter is facing competition not only from Facebook, but also messaging app Snapchat.

Revenue fell about 4.7 percent to $573.9 million, the second time it has fallen since Twitter's debut in 2013.

Twitter has made several efforts to attract more users, including merging some features to streamline discoverability and making various UI refinements.

The company's completely stalled user growth during its second quarter sent shares diving more than 10% in pre-market trading on Wednesday.
