Sessions: Trump admin reviewing policy on media subpoenas

Sessions: Trump admin reviewing policy on media subpoenas

During President Donald Trump's administration, the only announced charges were filed against Reality Leigh Winner, a 25-year-old government contractor, the Post says. He called them the latest in an escalating series of disclosures which has led to a tripling of the number of active Department of Justice leak investigations.

The attorney general said four people are already being prosecuted to allegedly leaking, though he did not provide any details.

Speaking to reporters after Sessions' speech, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein did not answer on whether any leaks have put American lives at risk.

The Justice Department has already received almost as many criminal referrals involving unauthorized disclosures of classified information than in the previous three years combined. And I have this warning for would be leakers: "Don't do it", Sessions said.

Sessions said prevention is key given the significant damage that occurs hen leaks are made.

He also signaled that the department may become more aggressive about prosecuting journalists, saying those policies are now under review.

"No government can be effective when its leaders cannot discuss sensitive matters in confidence or talk freely in confidence with foreign leaders", said Sessions as he was joined by top intelligence officials to talk about the dramatic growth in the number of unauthorised disclosures of classified national security information in recent months.

Mazda to produce electric cars together
In a tweet , Trump said, "Consumer confidence is at a 16 year high.and for good reason". At the time, the automaker was considering making cars for the USA market in Mexico.

According to Coats, these national security breaches do not just originate in the intelligence community but they come from a wide range of sources within the government, including the executive branch and Congress. "We respect the important role of the press plays, and will give them respect".

"If you improperly disclose classified information, we will find you, we will investigate you and we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law", Coats said.

Yet Trump's anger about the leaks of sensitive and classified information was ignited even before his inauguration. Numerous stories have been attributed to former administration officials, which has raised suspicions on the right that they are coming from holdovers from former President Obama's government. In that discussion, Trump told Comey to throw journalists in jail, according to the former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief's account.

Hours later, the Wall Street Journal reported a grand jury had been convened in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation.

The Washington Post on Thursday published transcripts of his conversations with the leaders of Mexico and Australia.

Trump's repeated broadsides raised the prospect that Sessions would be dismissed, a possibility which grew more acute as their personal relationship became increasingly strained.

But the printed Oval Office transcripts went too far for some Democrats, who warned that the release of the president's private conversations with foreign leaders undermines national security. "But we must draw the line somewhere".
