Over 4,000 athletes from 11 nations strode into the Malaysian capital's newly refurbished, 87,000-capacity Bukit Jalil stadium, which was sold out for the vibrant show.

Malaysia's Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said during the opening ceremony that the SEA Games played a significant role in using sports to unite and bring out the best in Asean athletes.

"When we applaud our athletes at the stadium or any other venues, our differences fade away, leaving us with only our similarities to forge a honest union of hearts for our nation", Khairy said.

The men's team lost 22-7 to the hosts, but their second place was an improvement from 2015 when they came third.

Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor, along with Malaysia's king, Sultan Muhammad V, and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi were present at the opening ceremony.

This is the sixth time Malaysia is hosting the regional Games after holding the competition in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989 and 2001.
