The Texas Chainsaw Massacre director Tobe Hooper has died

Tobe Hooper, the acclaimed horror director of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Poltergeist, has died at age 74.

His film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre became an instant classic for the horror genre; and grew to become one of the most successful independent films of the 1970s. The film, based on the serial-killing cannibal Ed Gein, tells the story of five friends on a drive through rural Texas to explore the home of the grandfather of Sally (Marilyn Burns) and wheelchair-bound Franklin (Paul A. Partain).

Hooper also directed several other horror films including The Funhouse (1981), Lifeforce(1985), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) and Night Terrors (1993). Those paying tribute to Hooper have included Baby Driver and Shaun of the Dead director Edgar Wright and Sleepwalkers director, Mick Garris, who collaborated with Hooper on Showtime's Masters of Horror show as well as Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

He is reportedly survived by two sons.

In many ways, Hooper's work on Texas Chainsaw wrote the playbook for future indie horror successes. Interestingly, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, considered an indie film when it was first released in 1974, was the film which led him to more high-profile projects.

Before making movie history Tobe started off as a college professor who did documentary film work and the occasional commercial.

Hooper's ideas have gone on to influence entire generations of filmmakers in horror and beyond. A sad day." James Wan, the mind behind the Conjuring franchise, shared, "Sad to hear the passing of Tobe Hooper. Conflicting stories have come out about how much creative input Spielberg had, though an open letter from Spielberg to Hooper credited the latter as director.

His last film, the 2013 "Djinn", was set in the United Arab Emirates and produced by Image Nation. We leave you with a look back at the eight Tobe Hooper films (okay, technically one of them's a mini-series) and the one fantastic TV episode that we'll never forget.
