Turkey coup trial: nearly 500 in court

Nearly 500 people arrested after last year's failed coup in Turkey are to go on trial accused of taking part in the plot.

Outside the courtroom, protestors gathered, shouting slogans against the defendants who were brought to court under heavy security. The remainder are charged but not in jail.

The key suspect is Fethullah Gulen, a US -based preacher, who is accused by the Turkish government of orchestrating the failed military coup. Gulen denies any involvement, Reuters reported.

Former air force commander Akin Ozturk and other defendants stationed at an air base northwest of the capital are accused of directing the coup and bombing government buildings, including parliament, and attempting to kill President Tayyip Erdogan.

Several similar cases are under way in Turkey after the coup attempt on July 15, 2016 that resulted in some 250 deaths.

Tension rises with Jordan after embassy guard shoots two
The two Jordanians, working for a furniture firm, had entered the embassy compound before the shooting, the police said. Israel's Cabinet said that they have allocated around $28 million for equipment and more security at the site.

Numerous 486 suspects face life terms in prison for crimes that include murder and attempt to assassinate Erdogan.

Thus far, Turkish authorities have stripped 342 retired army personnel of their ranks and in all, authorities have sacked or suspended more than 150,000 officials, and arrested some 50,000 people from the military, police, judiciary, academia and other sectors.

Mr Erdogan's critics say he is using the purge that followed the coup to stifle political dissent.

The trial focuses on events at the Akinci air base which it is alleged was the plotters' headquarters.
