USA protesters topple Confederate statue

According to WRAL, Takiya Thompson, a North Carolina Central University student, used a ladder to scale the podium on which the Confederate Soldiers Monument stood, then climbed the statue and wrapped a strap around it so other protesters could pull it down.

In 2016, a study by the Southern Poverty Law Center documented more than 700 Confederate statues and monuments across the country.

Various groups, including extremist white nationalists and white supremacists, gathered to protest the removal of a Confederate statue in Charlottesville.

Such statues have become points of controversy, capturing headlines in recent months as activist call for the removal of Confederate monuments on the grounds that they are symbols of hate and racism.

"It needs to be removed", Loan Tran, a rally organizer, told CBS North Carolina earlier Monday.

On April 9, 1865, near the town of Appomattox Court House, Virginia, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Union General Ulysses S. Grant.

Clashes began on Friday night and continued throughout the day on Sunday, culminating in a fatal vehicle attack that killed one counter-protester and injured 19 others.

The carnage peaked when self-confessed Nazi sympathizer, James Alex Fields Jr., deliberately drove his vehicle into a group of activists, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring dozens more. "Mom the statue is down, they are protesting downtown, let's go, let's go!" said Sumpter.

Confederate statues on state property should be dismantled, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced on Tuesday. In Florida, a Confederate statue was relocated lawfully on Monday. The vandals spray painted the words "f*** fascists" onto the marble base of the statue.

The statue, unveiled in 1909, depicts a soldier known as "Old Joe" standing with his gun in his hands.

A statue of a Confederate officer is seen splattered with orange paint near a park in Louisville.

"The Confederacy sought to protect slavery, dissolve the Union and preserve white supremacy", Karen Anderson, executive director of the ACLU-NC said in a statement. Timothy Peek stood silently in front of the monument, sending a subtle message that police would let the crowd protest but would not allow property damage.

The incident in Durham County on Monday was in part sparked by the deadly white nationalist rally in Virginia over the weekend. The only people who can support him are racist, anti-Semites.
