USA stocks were lower Wednesday afternoon as investors rushed to safe-haven assets after President Donald Trump's "fire and fury" warning to North Korea escalated tensions with the nuclear-armed nation.

Economic data showed US worker productivity rose more than expected in the second quarter but the trend remained weak.

Bill Northey, chief investment officer at U.S. Bank Private Client Group in Helena, Montana, said the market's risk-off move on North Korea tensions has been relatively shallow. The bench mark S&P 500 Index settled at 2474.92, down 5.99 or -0.24% and the tech-based NASDAQ-100 Index finished the session at 6368.43, down 15.34 or -0.24%.

Japan said on Tuesday it was possible that North Korea had already developed nuclear warheads and warned of an acute threat posed by its weapons programs as Pyongyang's continues missile and nuclear tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

Upmarket clothing brands Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors were early winners on the U.S. stock market on Tuesday, surprising investors with their quarterly performance despite a tough climate for retailers. Japan's Nikkei 225 Index tumbled by 1.3 percent, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell by 0.4 percent.

The 10-year note fetched a high yield of 2.250 percent, above the expected 2.234 percent at the bid deadline. Elsewhere, the German Dax has opened down 0.80%, France's CAC40 index is down 0.87%, and the Euro Stoxx 50 is down 0.81%.
