5 dubious claims Myanmar's Suu Kyi made in her speech

A military campaign by Myanmar's security forces has destroyed thousands of homes across Maungdaw and Rathedaung Townships, Human Rights Watch said.

The leader of a team of United Nations human rights investigators said Tuesday that comments by Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi "bode well" for its so-far unsuccessful efforts to gain access to the country now facing an exodus of Rohingya Muslims to neighboring Bangladesh.

Communal violence has torn through Rakhine state since Rohingya militants staged deadly attacks on police posts on August 25.

Most of the several hundred thousand Rohingya who have fled to Bangladesh before this latest wave still aren't registered.

"More than 50 percent of the villages of Muslims are intact".

There have also been calls to strip Suu Kyi of the Nobel Peace Prize she was awarded in 1991, but the Nobel Institute said that this will not happen.

Suu Kyi did not refer to the Rohingya by name, in keeping with the government's view that members of the ethnic and religious minority are illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and not among the dozens of national ethnicities officially recognized by Myanmar.

"If Myanmar has nothing to hide, it should allow United Nations investigators into the country, including Rakhine state", Amnesty said.

Suu Kyi explained how Myanmar could assist Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh willing to return to Rakhine.

Tillerson admits difficulty of oil embargo on N. Korea
Security Council, that's going to be very hard ", Tillerson added, according to an official transcript. "We will stand by our ally as Brexit continues to take shape".

This failure stems partly from the legacy of the military regime, and partly from Myanmar's geostrategic significance and natural resources, which impel the country's powerful allies to ward off any effective UN Security Council resolutions against the state's grave human rights violations.

He also criticised Aung San Suu Kyi's reluctance to condemn the violence, saying as "one of the first European ministers to meet her after she was freed" he was struck by "her enormous moral authority and the reverence with which she is held in Burma" and was very "disturbed" that she was "not using that moral authority to condemn what is effectively ethnic cleansing".

"If you are interested in joining us in our endeavors, please let us know", Suu Kyi said, adding "We can arrange for you to visit these areas and to ask (those who have stayed) why they have not fled, why they have chosen to remain in their villages".

"What Suu Kyi told her people and the world is a complete lie".

Among the Rohingya refugees are more than 500 Hindus who fled the persecution in their homeland. I liked what she said.

Big screens broadcast Aung San Suu Kyi's speech on the Rohingya crisis nationwide as she tried to mollify the world without riling Myanmar's army or challenging longstanding prejudices - but few could understand her clipped English.

Earlier this month, the Myanmar government had said 176 out of 471, or 37.4% of all Rohingya villages were empty of people, and an additional 34 villages were "partially abandoned".

"There is overwhelming evidence that security forces are engaged in a campaign of ethnic cleansing", Gomez said.

"Many came only with the clothes on their backs", Weir said. "To the people, she is defending the country's image". China, India, and Russian Federation lend Myanmar unwavering support, and back the government line that the crisis stems not from extreme structural problems in the Myanmar polity but from Rohingya "terrorism" that destabilised a period of peace.
