Air strikes kill 69 in Syrian east since Sunday: Observatory

Pro-Assad troops and western-backed forces fighting Islamic State in the Syrian city of Deir Ezzor are within three miles of a clash as both sides seek to control routes to the Iraqi border.

The advances have been accompanied by deadly air strikes, with a monitor saying 19 civilians were killed Monday in suspected Russian air raids northwest of the city. He said the SDF had advanced to six kilometres from the eastern banks of the Euphrates River across from Deir Ezzor city.

After breaking an ISIS blockade, Syria's army is seeking to encircle the remaining extremist-held parts of Deir al-Zor city, a military source said Wednesday.

Separately, Syrian state television said on Tuesday Islamic State militants have been using the river to flee the city of Deir al-Zor.

"Russian and Syrian regime warplanes are striking IS positions in the city and its outskirts", he added.

Since 2014, IS has held swathes of the province and about 60 percent of its capital, encircling two regime-held enclaves in the western half of Deir Ezzor city.

An unwavering ally of Assad's regime, Russian Federation militarily intervened in the Syria's six-year conflict in September 2015 when the government was in trouble in its fight against rebels and armed groups.

SDF fighters are waging a separate offensive that has captured swathes of territory from IS east of the Euphrates River, which cuts across the province, but have yet to reach the city itself.

Local figures would announce "the preparatory committee of the Deir Ezzor Civil Council and the support of the tribes for the SDF", the media office said in a statement.

The SDF, an alliance of Arab and Kurdish fighters, is also battling IS in the jihadists' de facto capital Raqa with backing from the US-led air coalition.
