America asks: How did eight people die in Florida nursing home?

By Wednesday evening, the state had issued an emergency moratorium on the facility admitting new patients, and Hollywood Police were investigating whether any laws had been broken.

Call after call was made from the Rehabilitation Center nursing home in Hollywood Hills, Florida to emergency services as elderly patients slipped into cardiac arrest and respiratory failure.

Broward County officials said about 100 patients were evacuated from the facility and officials are working to relocate them to safety.

"The Hollywood Police Department has been granted a search warrant for this property", Raelin Storey, the city's public affairs director, said at a news conference outside the nursing home Thursday morning. It also said the information on the power outage was relayed to FPL on Tuesday as "mission-critical".

The building has been without power since Hurricane Irma struck.

"We came here, leaving everything at home, and we go back to nothing", Lopez said.

Not counting the nursing home deaths, at least 15 people in Florida have died under Irma-related circumstances, and six more in SC and Georgia, many of them well after the storm had passed. He said the building has been sealed off for the criminal investigation but did not give further details. For example, it said the facility's certified nursing assistants significantly exceeded state and national averages for the amounts of time they spent with each resident daily.

In nearby Orange County, deputies found three people dead and four others were taken to a hospital for treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning Tuesday afternoon. Though staff tried to gather as many residents as possible near cooling fans, it might not have been enough to keep patients at a safe temperature.

At least 25 people died when Irma pounded the Southeast earlier this week, including 12 people in Florida.

Hurricane Irma: No power, blocked roads add to frustrations in Florida

Categorized as one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record when it rampaged through the Caribbean, Irma killed more than 60 people, officials said. A person by the same name was among several people who were listed as current or former owners of a Miami hospital and who paid a $15.4 million settlement over an alleged scheme in which the hospital "paid kickbacks to physicians in return for patient admissions", according to the Department of Justice.

An estimated 150 facilities out of the almost 700 in the state are now without full power services, the association said.

Rubio, a Republican, tweeted that he is asking the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to review whether The Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills "was in violation of any federal regulations".

Sanchez said 115 people were evacuated to the Memorial Hospital system's North, South, and Pembroke Pines branches.

Popular with retirees, Florida is home to more than 680 nursing homes, which house about 73,000 residents, according to the Florida Health Care Association.

A kitchen worker at the center told the Miami Herald that the facility "had power from a generator to cook meals, but no air conditioning".

The vast majority of South Florida remains without power three days after Irma nailed South Florida.

The nursing home deaths brought the total number of storm-related fatalities in Florida to 20 and illustrated the urgency of restoring electricity to millions of people across the southern state. But the extent of the damage has been an unanswered question for days because some places have been unreachable.
