Attorney general defends Trump on National Football League protests at free-speech talk

Attorney general defends Trump on National Football League protests at free-speech talk

Sessions announced that the Justice Department "will enforce federal law, defend free speech and protect students' free expression from whatever end of the political spectrum it may come".

"As the Justice Department wades into issues of campus speech, we hope its defense of free expression on campus will encompass not only opposition to infringements on free speech, but also the imperative to ensure that USA university campuses are truly open to the speech of all students, regardless of political leanings, LGBT status and racial, ethnic, or religious background", PEN America Executive Director Suzanne Nossel said in a statement. Protesters shut down the discussion by shouting, he said. He pointed out that the football players in question weren't subject to any kind of legal prosecution, but said that people who take "provocative actions" should "expect to be condemned".

He argued the players were, in effect, "denigrating" symbols of the United States, and noted that while players wouldn't be subject to prosecution, they could expect condemnation for taking "provocative" actions.

Barnett, described in the New York Times as a "passionate libertarian", will follow the remarks by leading a conversation about free speech, a topic that has come to mean liberal intolerance of conservative ideas, especially on college campuses, for many members of the right.

"Not a contradiction there", Sessions said.

That statement of interest pertainsto an ongoing case involving the right of a campus Christian group to proselytize at a Georgia college, which Session did not name.

"We will not be fooled", the letter reads.

Jeff Sessions is an absolute disgrace, a worthless human being, serving as our Attorney General.

The Department of Justice will get involved in different lawsuits where students are being restricted with regard to how they express their opinion, Sessions said.

North Korea Says US Declared War, May Take Countermeasures
White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders on Monday denied the United States had declared war, calling the suggestion "absurd". Ri noted that the statement from Trump was "clearly a declaration of war" even if it came from the U.S. president.

Update: A statement was added from Georgetown Law School.

He castigated universities who give in to protestor demands on a controversial speaker as giving in to a "heckler's veto".

"... The president has free speech rights too", Sessions argued.

"It baffles me that our protest is still being misconstrued as disrespectful to the country, flag and military personnel", he wrote, referring to the decision he and former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick made previous year to kneel during the anthem.

After Sessions finished his initial remarks, 10 students who were wearing #BlackLivesMatter shirts inside the auditorium stood up and placed tape over their mouths and silently protested the rest of the event.

The Georgetown chapter of Young Democratic Socialists of America tweeted that they'll attend the protest. "We hope in the future that AG Sessions will be fearless enough to engage in the robust debate that he claims to value". Given limited capacity, she said, the school's policy has held that the hosting organization determines the guest list.

The debate Sessions entered has, in recent months, become a violent one. At Middlebury College in Vermont in March, protests outside the speech of a conservative political scientist devolved into a shoving match that left one professor hospitalized. "Adhering to the First Amendment requires more than rhetoric".

An estimated 1 in 10 USA colleges have free speech zone policies that limit freedom of expression on campus, according to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.

In a speech at Georgetown Law School's Center for the Constitution, Sessions cited a study that surveyed 450 colleges and universities across the country and found that 40 percent have codes that "substantially infringe on constitutionally protected speech".
