Disney joins Universal, Busch Gardens in closing before Irma nears

Universal Studios Orlando will maintain a similar schedule, closing at 7 p.m. on Saturday and intending to re-open on Tuesday.

The Orlando Sentinel reports Walt Disney World Resort doesn't typically allow guests to change or cancel planned visits ahead of a hurricane unless there is an active warning in place from the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area. Disney's Blizzard Beach water park was closed on Friday.

Walt Disney World will be open Saturday, but with "modifed hours".

The Saturday, September 9 Fantasmic! and Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular performances are canceled.

Universal's parks are shutting their doors beginning at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday and will remain closed until Tuesday.

While Disney World has only closed 4 times before due to a hurricane, the resort is well equipped to deal with such a storm.

The Disney parks and attractions will close up shop at points between Friday night and Saturday night. "Our parks have comprehensive weather preparedness plans to ensure the safety of our guests, employees and animals", SeaWorld said in a statement on its website.

Disney World shuttered its gates on Sept. 15, 1999, for Hurricane Floyd; Sept. 4 and 5, 1999, for Hurricane Frances; Sept. 26, 2004, for Hurricane Jeanne; and October 7, 2016 for Hurricane Matthew.
