Facebook reportedly gives Mueller records of fraudulent accounts for Russian Federation investigation

The information Facebook shared with Mr. Mueller included copies of the ads and details about the accounts that bought them and the targeting criteria they used, the people familiar with the matter said.

The Facebook analysis suggests these accounts and Pages were affiliated with one another and likely operated out of Russian Federation. Facebook policy dictates that it would only turn over "the stored contents of any account", including messages and location information, in response to a search warrant, some of them said.

Facebook didn't share the same information with Congress partly because of concerns of disrupting the special counsel's investigation and because of USA privacy laws.

Those funds bought more than 5,000 ads on Facebook, the company said.

Some lawmakers were unhappy with the lack of information divulged by Facebook. Sen.

Facebook, the world's largest social network, said last week that an operation likely based in Russian Federation had placed thousands of US ads with polarizing views on topics such as immigration, race and gay rights on the site during a two-year period through May 2017.

More than 400000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh

Reports of the warrant, that might come as bad news those who have denied the Russian election interference or have called it a "witch hunt" also focus on probing the targeted ads these accounts purchased during the 2016 election.

"Mueller clearly *already* has enough information on these accounts - and their link to a potential crime", tweeted Asha Rangappa, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation counterintelligence agent. "That means that he has uncovered a great deal of evidence through other avenues of Russian election interference".

Facebook said in its initial statement that about 25% of the ads purchased by Russians during the election "were geographically targeted", and many analysts have found it hard to believe that foreign entities would have had the kind of granular knowledge of American politics necessary to target specific demographics and voting precincts. Some ads directly mentioned Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton during the presidential campaign.

A Facebook spokesman told the newspaper that the company was continuing its probe and was cooperating with federal authorities.

The company also listed out steps it has implemented towards curbing fake accounts and stories on the platform.

"Platforms like Facebook and Twitter really need to put technical measures in place that would prevent the spread of fake information or the creation of groups that may promote hate speech", Gruzd said.
