South Korean football legend Cha Bum-kun and reigning Olympic fencing champion Park Sang-young were unveiled as torch runners for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Wednesday.

"We had an opportunity to be in South Korea a little over a month ago and met with the four-star general who oversees all the USA forces there".

"With the safety and the security of the athletes at the top of its priorities, the IOC indicates that nothing at this time leads to believe that the organising conditions of the winter Olympic Games do not comply with these imperatives", it said.

The Games, scheduled for February 9-25, will take place just 80 km (50 miles) from the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, the world's most heavily armed border.

Salt Lake City, Denver, the Reno/Lake Tahoe area have all expressed interest in bidding for the 2026 Games and joining an global field that potentially could include Calgary, Innsbruck, Stockholm and France.

The U.S. Olympic committee said it was working with authorities to ensure the safety of its delegation, while Russian Federation said security was each host country's responsibility and China's foreign ministry said it was not aware of any plans for its Olympic team to not attend.

The North's International Olympic Committee member Chang Ung has also said the Pyeongchang Games will not be affected by the current crisis and expressed hopes of seeing athletes from his country competing.

North and South Korea remain technically at war after their 1950-53 conflict ended with a truce and not a peace treaty.

"We are relying on advice from DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and working with the Korean Ambassador and if their advice changes, we will advise our team accordingly but for the moment there is no suggestion that the Games will not go ahead or their safety is compromised".
