Irma knocks out power to about 600000 customers in Florida

"Everyone in Florida will be impacted in some way by this storm", Eric Silagy said at a news conference, urging FPL customers to be prepared for a multi-week restoration process, Reuters reported.

The number of homes and businesses without power in Florida as Hurricane Irma pummels the southern part of the state approached 600,000 Sunday morning. In Broward, more than a third of FPL's customers - 360,750 out of 933,300 - were without power.

"It's going to get worse", Scott said. "This is a very powerful storm and every bit of Florida is going to feel its wrath".

"FPL has built the most sophisticated and strongest power grid in the nation". "A storm of this magnitude an intensity will require us in many cases to completely rebuild out electric system from the ground up, particularly on the west coast".

Stay far away from downed power lines and anything that may be in contact with a downed power line.

Before Hurricane Irma's full force reached Central Florida thousands of residents along the Space Coast were already without power.

Once Irma hits, crews will begin working to restore power as soon as conditions are safe.

FPL also said it will proactively shut down certain substations before they flood, so they can turn them back online more quickly.

The inspectors will remain at the nuclear plant sites and the incident response center will remain staffed until the agency is assured that the storm no longer poses a risk to these facilities, the agency said.
