Merkel set to win 4th term

Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative bloc was on course Sunday for a lackluster victory in Germany's national election while the anti-migrant Alternative for Germany party was heading for a triumphant entry into parliament, projections suggested.

Meanwhile, the AfD, a far-right nationalist, anti-Islam party, was on track to win 13.5%, emerging as Germany's third-strongest party.

Projections for ARD and ZDF public television, based on exit polls and partial counting, showed Merkel's Christian Democratic Union and their Bavaria-only allies, the Christian Social Union, winning around 33 per cent of the vote - down from 41.5 per cent four years ago.

Polling indicates challenger Martin Schulz's Social Democrats trailed in second place, with between 20 and 21 percent support.

This means Merkel will likely have to form ties with the Greens and liberals, in the so-called Jamaica coalition. Some supporters chanted "AfD!"

In the runup to the election, NPR's Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson reports German voters were inundated with campaign posters, including ones from the anti-Muslim AfD party with the blunt slogan: "Burkas?"

Merkel has over the years pulled her party toward the centre, but may now face new pressure for a more robust conservative image.

"Today is a hard and bitter day", said SPD leader Martin Schulz, who had hoped to take the chancellorship from Merkel.

The AfD is expected to hold some 87 seats in parliament.

Merkel, often called the most powerful woman on the global stage, ran on her record as a steady pair of hands in a turbulent world, warning voters not to indulge in "experiments".

Germany in particular is coping with the arrival of more than 1 million refugees and other new migrants, with tension with Russian Federation since Moscow's incursions into Ukraine, and with doubt about Europe's future since Britain voted to quit the EU.

The party has made breaking taboos its trademark.

Law student Sabine Maier dismissed the AfD as "too extreme" as she voted in Berlin.

"They aren't all fascists", she said.

The new parliament will have six caucuses, compared with four previously, and the Social Democrats said they intend to lead the opposition.

Merkel said before the elections that she was open to all possible coalition options, except a partnership with the far-right AfD or the socialist Left Party.

The SPD said its catastrophic result would lead it to seek a stint in opposition to rekindle its fighting spirit.

In theory they could join forces with the left-leaning Greens, who, however, starkly differ from the FDP on issues from climate change to migration policy. The gains could potentially be disruptive to politics in Germany, the largest economy in Europe. That would be the worst result since World War II for the party, which has served since 2013 as the junior partner in a "grand coalition" of Germany's biggest parties under Merkel. This figure does not include the votes of postal voters.
