Monday: Irma downgraded to tropical storm after shoving past Tampa Bay

Below are live updates on Irma.

The NHC also wrote: "The center of Hurricane Irma made landfall at Cudjoe Key in the lower Florida Keys at 9:10 am EDT".

- Irma continues to weaken as it moves over northern Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.

In one of the country's largest evacuations, about 5.6 million people in Florida - more than one-quarter of the state's population - were ordered to leave, and another 540,000 were ordered out on the Georgia coast.

The hurricane is expected to make a slow, ruinous march up the state's west coast, hitting the heavily populated Tampa-St.

Rescue mode: Mayor Lenny Curry said his city is in "rescue mode", with teams working to evacuate people from low-lying areas impacted by the flooding.

Irma has caused as yet untold damage from wind and storm surges since making landfall in southern Florida, following hot on the heels of Hurricane Harvey's impact on Houston.

"We're all hanging in there, ready to get out there to help others as soon as it's safe to do so", Marco Island Police Chief Al Schettino said as the storm pounded his city Sunday.

Police in Miami-Dade County said they had made 29 arrests for looting and burglary.

More than 3.4 million homes in the state are without power, with parts of the city of Miami are under water. And there's plenty more damage to come as the storm moves up to Tampa. No injuries were reported in either case.

Statewide, an estimated 13 million people, or two-thirds of Florida's population, remained without power.

- At least 26 deaths have been blamed on Irma in the Caribbean islands, where it hit before barreling toward Florida.

Middle Georgia and northward are expecting 3-8 inches of rain and isolated reports of 12 inches. Streets flooded, and flying objects such as coconuts turned into unsafe projectiles. And at least two construction cranes partially collapsed.

"Everything is flooded", he said.

A storm surge warning has been issued for much of the Florida Peninsula and extended into southern Carolina. During that storm, "I lived the experience of feeling that I was inside a blender", she said.

In the Keys, where the storm roared ashore Sunday morning with winds of 130 miles per hour, video showed houses shoved from their foundations and boats tossed onto the pavement.

N.C. Emergency Management and the American Red Cross and county emergency managers also opened shelters in the following locations.

The second storm has sustained top wins of 150 miles per hour, according to the Associated Press, and is expected to move west to northwest into the Atlantic Ocean over the next few days, reported CNN.

The storm is still expected to travel through the state Georgia, into Alabama, and then into the Mid-South, based on the latest projections. Locally, we will continue to see strong winds and persistent showers Monday night from Irma. Schools in the state planned to close Monday.

The centre of the system - America's second major hurricane in a week - lost strength and was downgraded to a tropical storm yesterday.
