New Zealand jet fuel shortage leaves passengers stranded

New Zealand's busiest airport faces up to two weeks of flight disruption after someone digging up a kauri log damaged the only jet fuel pipeline between Northland's Marsden Point refinery and Auckland.

"However, closer inspection after excavating the pipeline has shown that the damaged section needs to be replaced".

Oil companies are rationing the fuel because a supply pipeline from Marsden Point has been shut down to fix a leak. That's expected to reduce pipeline income and constrain refining income, which NZ Refining says will hit revenue by $10 million to $15 million.

It appeared heavy equipment had dent the pipe and removed the protective coating, Mr Post said in a statement. Contaminated soil had been taken to refinery for treatment.

"We will have additional staff in the terminals supporting passengers and addressing any questions or concerns they may have".

The government has offered to "work with" airlines hampered by the shortage of jet fuel.

It must be departing from an EU airport and operated by any airline OR arriving at an EU airport and operated by an EU airline. He said: "Travellers affected will be understandably upset and have every right to expect help and support from the airline".

Qantas and Jetstar said they were working to minimise impact on customers and urged people to check their flight status online.

BARNZ represents 28 worldwide airlines flying into and out of New Zealand.

"The fuel companies are confident that supply of these fuels will be maintained and it is unlikely that motorists will be inconvenienced", she says.

It said airlines would have to find different fuelling methods, including planes carrying more fuel to enable return flights and refuelling at other airports.

Long-haul flights have been advised to refuel at other New Zealand airports or global airports, including in Australia and Fiji, while all flights flying into Auckland have been advised to carry enough fuel for its journey out of the hub, the New Zealand Herald reports.

"Market-based reforms, including fair and reasonable access to on-airport jet fuel storage and distribution systems, are necessary to enable effective competition between suppliers and support reliability and industry resilience".
