It also includes the one arrest made after the vehicle attack near Finsbury Park Mosque.

"Significantly, it's the highest number of arrests in a year since they began recording terror arrest statistics back in 2001 after the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon in the US".

Of these 379 terror-related arrests over the a year ago, 12 were made in connection with the Westminster attack, 23 related to the Manchester Arena bombing and 21 arrests were related to the attack some time later at London Bridge.

In its quarterly bulletin on police use of counter-terrorism powers, the Home Office said 123 of those arrested were charged, of which 105 were taken in on terrorism offences.

A total of 21 people were detained after three Islamist militants drove into pedestrians on London Bridge before attacking and stabbing people at nearby restaurants and bars, resulting in eight deaths, in June.

"That's why we're looking at such a high number, but they are still pretty significant".

Around half (189) of those held were released without charge, while others were released on bail (54) or faced "alternative action" (11).

He said that in the three years up to March this year, police foiled 13 potential attacks, reports Reuters.

The Home Office said that 91 per cent of those in jail were Islamic extremists while five per cent were far-right extremists.

According to the Guardian, 19 terrorist plots have been foiled since June 2013.

Britain's terror threat level remains at "severe", the second-highest level, meaning an attack is highly likely.
