Rohingyas are not terrorists, nor a threat to India's security: Refugee

"It is important for us to see with our own eyes the sites of these alleged violations and abuses and to speak directly with the affected people and with the authorities", he stated, noting that the Commission has requested the Government of Myanmar for unfettered access to the country.

He said the USA has warned Myanmar about potential repercussions if it doesn't address the crisis, including threats to the stability of its borders, the risk of attracting worldwide terrorists, scaring off investment, and ultimately stunting its transition to democracy.

Bangladesh has been hosting more than 800,000 Rohingya Muslims who crossed the border facing persecution in neighbouring Myanmar in the past decades.

Many of those who had fled to India after the earlier spate of violence are settled in Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.

But such a move was "impossible", said state secretary Tin Maung Swe, since it might anger Rakhine Buddhists and further inflame communal tensions.

Protesters, some carrying sticks and metal bars, threw petrol bombs and about 200 police were forced to disperse them by shooting into the air, a witness said, adding that he saw some injured people. "There was a mob of Rakhine people too", said Usman Goni, 55, after he stepped off a boat with his seven children and wife, clutching two sticks tied in rope and a sack.

Eight people were detained, the office said. No aid workers were hurt, a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said.

Buddhist-majority Myanmar denies ethnic cleansing, saying its security forces are tackling Rohingya terrorists.

Over 400,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled a Myanmar military offensive that began after a series of guerrilla attacks on August 25 on security posts and an army camp in which about a dozen people were killed.

The response of Myanmar's security forces to last year's attack by insurgents is still being investigated.

The Permanent People's Tribunal (PPT) here will give its findings to global bodies, especially the United Nations, for further action to be taken against Myanmar to end the violence.

Britain, France and Australia urged Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday to push for an end to military violence against Rohingya Muslims, while her national security adviser said those who had fled could return but the process had to be discussed.

Nobel laureate Suu Kyi has faced a barrage of criticism from overseas for not stopping the violence.

"With so many influential leaders gathered in NY, the next step should be work on a U.N. General Assembly resolution condemning the abuses and a Security Council resolution to impose targeted sanctions and an arms embargo on the commanders leading this brutal campaign" he said.

Murphy, the most senior foreign official to visit Myanmar since the violence erupted, met government officials and representatives of different communities in Sittwe.

The situation could have an impact on Myanmar´s transition and risked creating "a more significant terrorism problem".
