Sonic Discloses That Hackers Breached Customers' Credit Cards

Cybersecurity blog KrebsOnSecurity says the activity may have led to stolen credit and debit cards being sold on underground exchanges.

SONIC has over 3,500 locations across the country, including four in CT.

Sonic has over 3,500 locations in the USA, including 15 in New York, according to NBC New York.

According to KrebsOnSecurity, five million credit and debit cards were put up for sale on a credit card theft website earlier in September.

The Oklahoma City-based company, which serves 3 million people a day, indicated that credit card customers were most likely at risk after the burger and shake giant was informed of "unusual activity" from its credit card processor. The company "immediately engaged third-party forensic experts and law enforcement when we heard from our processor", it said.

Sonic administrators said they don't know how many or which Sonic locations may be affected.

The popular fast food chain has almost 3,600 locations across 45 states in the US.

Brian Krebs, author of KrebsOnSecurity, said he was alerted to the breach by several financial institution representatives who began noticing a pattern of fraudulent transactions on cards that had all been used at the eatery. "While law enforcement limits the information we can share, we will communicate additional information as we are able".

The last fast-food chain to be impacted by a hack of this magnitude was Wendy's a year ago, which had more than 1,000 locations compromised.
