Theresa May asks Donald Trump to intervene in Northern Ireland trade dispute

Bombardier, Canadian aerospace company that employs Belfast's about 4,500 people and accounts for Northern Ireland's 10% manufacturing exports that are now facing important costs in a spat with the Boeing, which is US's Aeronautics powerhouse.

American authorities are now investigating the complaint and are expected to present their preliminary findings on September 25, which could lead to fines or tariffs against Bombardier.

The federal government no longer talks directly to Boeing about the Super Hornet acquisition over the dispute, but, under the process known as a "foreign military sale", the Canadian government is officially a client of the United States government in this ongoing acquisition.

May has been warned if Bombardier is ruled against in the USA - and the country refuses to order the planes - its operation in Ireland could be killed off risking all 4,500 jobs at the company's airplane-wing production factory in Belfast. May's concern over the dispute.

Prime Minister Theresa May has asked US President Trump to help broker a deal in the spat between Boeing and Canadian aerospace giant Bombardier.

Sir Jeremy Heywood, the cabinet secretary and Britain's most senior civil servant, has also been involved.

"This is a commercial matter but the United Kingdom government is working tirelessly to safeguard Bombardier's operations and its highly skilled workers in Belfast", a United Kingdom government spokesperson said by e-mail.

Efforts to also get the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity to the President, Femi Adesina, to comment also met a brick wall. In a short reaction when she spoke briefly with journalists on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Mrs.

"Ministers across government have engaged swiftly and extensively with Boeing, Bombardier, the U.S. and Canadian governments". "I'm here to meet with Boeing to encourage the company to drop its case and seek a resolution with Bombardier".

"Boeing had to take action as subsidised competition has hurt us now and will continue to hurt us for years to come, and we could not stand by given this clear case of illegal dumping", it said in a statement.

On Tuesday Bombardier branded the petition "an unfounded assault on airlines, the travelling public and further innovation in aerospace".

Canada hasn't committed to buying the St. Louis-made fighters, citing Boeing's current trade complaint against Bombardier. Boeing has accused Bombardier of receiving unfair state support for its C-series plan, including a loan worth £113 million given to it by the British government. While Her Majesty's government has been working behind the scenes, the Canadian prime minister has been chasing headlines rather than standing up for Bombardier.

A senior Boeing official told The Canadian Press this month the firm was concerned that Bombardier's deal with Delta could hurt its long-term prosperity and that of the entire aerospace sector.

Two other American carriers, Spirit Airlines Inc. and Sun Country Airlines, have joined the fray calling for Bombardier's right to sell aircraft in the country.
