Theresa May calls on China to act over North Korea missile launches

On a visit to Japan, May also said Britain and the European Union must focus on their future relationship, "ensuring we can get that trade deal right and also that we can form new trade deals around the rest of the world". "I think they are a key player in this".

"We condemn North Korea in the strongest words possible for a reckless act which was a clear violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions", May told a press briefing during an official visit to Japan.

"We see China as being the key in this", she told reporters, echoing calls from Donald Trump who has been trying to persuade Chinese president Xi Jinping to help thwart Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions. Last week, Japan expanded its own sanctions against the North, after a similar U.S. move.

"I think we will give businesses certainty, which is what business wants at the point at which we leave".

Pyongyang has tested a barrage of missiles over the past years, but it is the first time it launches what is believed to be a ballistic missile over Japan.

Shinzo Abe has said he has faith in the future of the British economy after Brexit
Theresa May condemns North Korea missile launch in 'strongest terms possible'

The Government says the United Kingdom is seeking to "cement its position as Japan's strongest security partner in Europe".

"The close cooperation between our two countries is particularly important in this critical juncture, with North Korean provocations presenting an unprecedented threat to worldwide security", May said at a press conference.

The visit will include an audience with the Emperor of Japan, a banquet with business leaders, a ride on the bullet train between Kyoto and Tokyo, as well as a bilateral summit and private dinner with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. "My discussions with Prime Minister Abe will focus on how we can prepare the ground for an ambitious free trade agreement after Brexit, based on the EU-Japan agreement which I very much hope is nearing conclusion", May said in a statement ahead of her departure.May will also discuss defense cooperation, describing Japan as "our closest security partner in Asia". May will be accompanied by International Trade Secretary Liam Fox as well as 15 other business executives from a range of sectors.

Japanese officials have signalled that there will be little progress on post-Brexit trade talks but rather more questions over Mrs May's stance on Brexit.

Foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said sanctions alone "cannot fundamentally resolve the issue", amid reports the three countries were pushing for new restrictions on North Korean oil imports and foreign workers.
