Tory battles ahead as MPs return for Brexit Bill debates

The SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon, Green co-leader Caroline Lucas and Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan also hit out at the proposals, with the latter warning it would be "catastrophic" for the capitals economy.

May said: "I'm not a quitter", and "What me and my government are about is not just delivering on Brexit but delivering a brighter future for the United Kingdom".

Remainers including Dominic Grieve QC, Anna Soubry and Nicky Morgan have warned that they will not support the legislation being used as a "power grab", with ministers permitted to amend laws "by decree".

A Labour spokesman said this afternoon that while the party "fully respects" the referendum result its MPs would be asked to oppose the legislation which unamended would "let government ministers grab powers from parliament to slash people's rights".

"The Repeal Bill. (is) the single most important step we can take to prevent a cliff-edge for people and businesses, because it transfers laws and provides legal continuity", she said in comments provided by her office.

"In bringing forward this Bill, we are ensuring the smoothest possible exit from the European Union - an exit that enables the continued stability of the UK's legal system, and maximises certainty for business, consumers and individuals across the UK", Mr Davis will say.

Next year, however, we think that the government is likely to fall.

"We've made time for proper parliamentary scrutiny of Brexit legislation, and I look forward to the contributions of MPs from across the House".

The Commons debate follows Wednesday's Prime Minister's Questions in which Mrs May was forced to adopt a conciliatory tone towards the pro-Remain Tory MP and leading Brexit rebel Anna Soubry, who signalled she is prepared to lead a backbench rebellion.

A decision to vote against the bill was taken collectively by the shadow cabinet after Keir Starmer, the shadow Brexit secretary, set out the case against backing it.

"But as democrats we can not vote for a Bill that unamended would let government ministers grab powers from parliament to slash people's rights at work and reduce protection for consumers and the environment".

Instead, Mr Corbyn launched an attack on the PM on public sector pay, zero hours contracts, pay and conditions at McDonald's and Sports Direct, and "dumped Tory manifesto promises".

The party hopes that taking a stand against the "Henry VIII powers" will split the Tories when MPs vote on the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill during the fi rst stage of its passage through the Commons, which begins tomorrow.

"No Conservative wants a bad Brexit deal, or to do anything that increases the threat of a Corbyn government".
