Turkey signs major missile deal with Russian Federation

According to Komersant, there are still a few issues to be clarified in the deal, namely the fact that Turkey intends to manufacture the missile systems in its territory, a move which is opposed by Russian security agencies, in terms of transferring military technology to a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation state. "Wait for you? We are taking our security measures and will continue to do so", Erdogan said during a meeting with mayors from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Ankara.

Although a prospective missile purchase from Russian Federation was made public several months ago, Mr Erdogan's announcement on Tuesday was the first confirmation that Turkey had transferred money to pay for the missile system, known as the S-400.

President Vladimir Putin's military advisor, Vladimir Kozhin confirmed the conclusion of the deal, TASS reports.

The total value of the deal is believed to be around $2.5 billion.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis stated earlier that the US will not impede the S-400 missiles deal, saying that it is a Turkish "sovereign decision".

He said the SDF had advanced to six kilometres from the eastern banks of the Euphrates River across from Deir Ezzor city.

Erdogan's remarks follow a statement from the US State Department on Tuesday which voiced concerns over Ankara's purchase of the Russian missile system. "This is a missile defense system that is going to be hosted by the Turkish air force, and the Turkish air force has no experience of anti-missile systems, therefore it is going to come with a significant number of Russian advisers, trainers, and operators and so on".

Hurriyet newspaper quoted Erdogan on Tuesday as telling a group of reporters that signatures have been put on accords and that Turkey has made a down payment on the surface-to-air defense systems.

The S-400 is Russia's most advanced long-range anti-aircraft missile system and can carry three types of missiles capable of destroying targets including ballistic and cruise missiles.

It can track and engage up to 300 targets at the same time and has an altitude ceiling of 27 kilometers (17 miles).
