Brazilian Olympics Chief Arrested in Rio

Brazilian police arrested Rio 2016 officials President Carlos Nuzman and Director General Leonardo Gryner today in relation to the "Unfair Play" cash for votes probe into the first South American Olympics.

The head of the Rio Olympics, who was arrested on suspicion of corruption yesterday, had 16 gold bars in a Swiss depository, police in Brazil have revealed.

The former UN Secretary General was welcomed to the Rio 2016 Olympics by Nuzman and sat front and center with him and IOC President Thomas Bach at the opening ceremony for the Games. They claim that it has been at the heart of a misappropriation of United States $2 million to Lamine Diack, a former International Olympic Committee member of Senegal, who has helped secure votes for Rio de Janeiro in view of the 2009 election.

"The IOC Ethics Commission's activities started immediately after the allegations were made, and the investigation is ongoing". No charges have yet been laid.

Nuzman, a former IOC member and now honorary member, is accused of arranging more than $2 million in bribes to get the IOC to pick Rio de Janeiro as host of the 2016 Olympic Games and faces allegations including corruption and money-laundering.

Bretas said that Nuzman's wealth increased roughly four-fold between 2006 and 2016.

Investigators said they also recovered a key they believed was for a safe in Switzerland containing gold. As a result, subsidies and payments from the International Olympic Committee have been frozen.

Nuzman has also been withdrawn from the International Olympic Committee coordination commission which is overseeing Tokyo's preparations for the 2020 Games.

In September, Mr Nuzman's home was searched.

Last month, his lawyer Sergio Mazzillo said Nuzman is innocent.

Carlos Arthur Nuzman has been president of Brazil's Olympic Committee for the past twenty two years.

Former Rio State Governor Sérgio Cabral has also been implicated in the global criminal conspiracy to secure the bid.

This will also be lifted partly or fully when the governance issues of the Organising Committee have been addressed to the satisfaction of the IOC Executive Board.

The IOC said it would cooperate with the investigation and asked Brazilian authorities to share any information about alleged vote buying.
