Catalan independence would not be recognised

Catalan independence would not be recognised

Such a move "will not go unanswered by the government", Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria warned on Monday, speaking on radio station COPE.

- Pressure continues to mount for Catalan President Carles Puigdemont who is aiming to declare the region's independence.

Yet politicians supporting Puigdemont's minority government and civil society groups backing independence say they will not accept anything less than a full declaration of independence.

Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy reiterated his call for togetherness in an interview with German newspaper Die Weit which was published on Monday.

The address could be the moment when Catalonia's leader declares that the region will break away.

Benet Salellas of the separatist Catalan CUP party said: 'It's very clear to me that those who I represent won't accept any other scenario'.

"If independence were to be recognized - which is not something that's being discussed - the most immediate effect would be that (Catalonia) automatically leaves the European Union", Loiseau said.

"We have listened to many people".

Barcelona's mayor has said the Catalan referendum is not enough for the region to declare independence from Spain.

Spain also sought to reassure worldwide investors concerned about the political situation in the country.

Britain's official terrorist threat level is set at "severe" indicating an attack is judged to be highly likely. There have been five attacks described by the authorities as terrorism this year, three involving vehicles.

Article 155 of Spain's constitution says that if a region's government breaches its constitutional obligations or "acts in a way that seriously threatens the general interest of Spain", Madrid can "take necessary measures to oblige it forcibly to comply or to protect said general interest".

Tempers have worsened over the past week after national police cracked down on voters during a banned October 1 Catalan independence referendum.

The region of Catalonia, home to 7.5 million people in the northeast, is crucial to Spain, which is the EU's fifth-biggest economy and a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

Madrid has expressed concerns that the regional parliament may vote for a unilateral independence from Spain.

Organisers of this weekend's peaceful protests said they represent the "silent majority", and urged the Catalan president not to honour the result of the vote.

Hundreds of thousands of people also demonstrated during a general strike on October 3.

Mr Puigdemont appeared steadfast on Sunday, saying a "yes" vote necessitated an independence declaration.

Rajoy was forced to apologize on Friday, but many in Catalan say the crackdown has only fueled their desire for independence.

Spain called the referendum illegal and police in riot gear moved in on the day of the vote to try to forcibly shut it down, firing rubber bullets at unarmed protesters.
