Child's Body Found Near Home of Missing Texas Girl

Texas authorities recovered the body of a small child while searching for Sherin Mathews, the three-year-old girl who went missing on October 7 when her parents said they had left her outside at 3 am for not drinking milk.

The Richardson Police Department said investigators discovered a body around 11 a.m. Sunday in a culvert beneath a road and believe it to be the toddler, reports said.

Her father, 37-year-old Wesley Mathews, was arrested in connection with the disappearance after he allegedly told police that he made her stand next to a tree across an alley from their Richardson home at around 3 a.m. because she refused to drink her milk, the Associated Press reported.

Mr Mathews told the police that his daughter, who had developmental disabilities and limited vocabulary skills, had to be fed often as she was severely malnourished, and he had acted out of "frustration".

Wesley Mathews reportedly waited until after sunrise before reporting Sherin's disappearance to the police.

A missing person's report was filed much later and Wesley Mathews was arrested and charged with abandoning or endangering a child, police confirmed. He was placed on electric ankle monitoring and surrendered his passport as a condition of making bond the next day.

Rafael De La Garza, an attorney for Wesley Mathews, told The Dallas Morning News after Monday's hearing that his client was "mourning the death of his child", but he didn't address the criminal charges.

Mathews also told detectives that he knew coyotes were seen in the area where he left his daughter.

Perlich stated the body was "most likely" Sherin, though a medical examiner has yet to make a positive identification, and investigators are still waiting for evidence to be processed.

- The parents of 3-year-old Sherin Mathews went to court Monday to try to convince a judge it is safe for their 4-year-old biological daughter to return home.

Police weren't alerted about Sherin being missing until five hours later.

Law enforcement has since searched the Mathews' home and taken a number of items, including a vacuum cleaner, trash bags, hair fibers, cell phones and laptops, police said.

The Indian-American parents of the missing 3-year-old adopted Indian girl are expected to appear in a court tomorrow to fight to try to get back their other child, U.S. media reported.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had expressed concern over the missing girl child and said, "We are deeply concerned about the missing child. Indian Embassy in USA is actively involved and they keep me informed", Swaraj tweeted on October 19.
