German prosecutors: Suspect used poison threats as blackmail

Earlier this month, police received an emailed threat to distribute 20 types of poisoned foodstuffs into supermarkets across Germany and overseas if they did not pay a sum believed to top €10 million ($12 million).

- German authorities said Saturday they are confident that a 53-year-old man arrested a day earlier is behind a blackmail attempt that saw jars of poisoned baby food placed on store shelves in southern Germany.

On Saturday, the main suspect told the custodial judge that he had not poisoned any other products than the ones already known, authorities in the southern city of Konstanz said.

While police believe they do have the suspect in custody, there was reportedly no confirmation that it was the man pictured in the surveillance images.

Police said they had found some baby food spiked with ethylene glycol, a colourless, odourless liquid used in the manufacture of antifreeze, which can be deadly if consumed.

Police on Thursday released images of a suspect in a supermarket near Konstanz. So far there are no reports of any injuries.

The footage has been made public so that officers can, if necessary, rule him out of their inquiries.

"The case is hard because the blackmailer did not say which food will be targeted or what poison he will use", a consumer protection official quoted by Reuters said.
