Kindle Oasis: Amazon Launches a Water-Resistant E-Reader

- Online retailer Amazon continues to improve its black-and-white e-ink Kindle reader lineup, with its latest model being a new $250 Kindle Oasis with 7-inch display and a waterproof design, AppleInsider reports.

I didn't have much time to demo the new Oasis, but it's certainly intriguing. The 2017 model slims down even more while offering a bigger 7-inch screen, and adds bonus features like water resistance and audiobook support.

Waterproofing is one feature Kindle fans have been asking for for years, leading to the creation of several business dedicated to custom-waterproofing the devices. The battery bulges along the back, creating a hand grip, and there are page turn buttons on the front. Oddly, Amazon has followed in the footsteps of Apple and Google and decided not to equip the device with a 3.5mm headphone jack. It has a similar physical design, with one thicker side that tapers down on the other side, for one-handed reading. Since it doesn't have speakers, they will have to stream to Bluetooth speakers or headphones. Audible will be available on the new Kindle Oasis via an over-the-air-update when the device ships later this month. And yet Amazon has also reduced the price.

It weighs just 194 grams, 10 grams less than the best-selling Kindle Paperwhite. Despite the bigger screen, it's still thin and light, making it a good tool for your reading. There is also a $350 model that offers free cellular connectivity, allowing you to download books without relying on Wi-Fi. He also noted that Kindle is in more countries than any other Amazon device. (Calling last year's model Oasis when it wasn't waterproofed, or even water-resistantis nearly insulting to Amazon's customers.) The new e-reader has been tested in two meters of water for up to 60 minutes.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test today
Dimuth Karunaratne made a career-best 196 as Sri Lanka racked up 482 against Pakistan on day two of the second Test on Saturday. It can be considered as a bad day which cost Pakistan the first Test; not even that, those match was in the bad sessions.

The new screen feautres the same 300 ppi as the Kindle Paperwhite and Voyage.

Kindle Oasis is available for pre-order from Amazon starting today, with shipping due to start on October 31.

But while 8GB of storage might be enough for keeping your library of eBooks, it might not be sufficient to carry all the audiobooks you want to listen to.

The Oasis also comes with a built-in Audible app so users who like audiobooks will like this a lot. Barnes & Noble's Nook business is dead, and Kobo has never been able to get real traction in the U.S. (although it's popular in Canada) outside of free-software fans and hardcore Amazon haters.
