Microsoft Decides to Shut Down the Production of Windows 10 Mobile

Belfiore adds that Microsoft tried "VERY HARD" to incentivise developers, even writing apps for them, in a bid to bring more apps to Windows Phone/Windows 10 Mobile.

Microsoft is no longer developing new features and hardware for Windows 10 mobile as the operating system is officially placed into servicing mode. Now, here in October of 2017, Microsoft VP for Windows Joe Belfiore just confirmed it. He wrote, "Building new features/hardware are not the focus". This is the first time a Microsoft executive has publicly admitted that the company is no longer pursuing any future with Windows 10 Mobile. This is not to be though as Windows Phone has been kept in servicing mode, where existing users will only get security patches and bug fixes.

Though Belfiore did not reveal what caused them to terminate Windows Phone, he may have alluded to the lack of app developer support as the main reason behind this move.

He also explained the reason why the company has made a decision to abandon the platform which doesn't really surprise us. But taking the head of Microsoft in 2014, Satya Nadella has changed his strategy by focusing on the development of apps Microsoft for iOS and Android. They have no plans to working on any Windows Phone or mobile application at the moment. The firm laid off thousands of workers a year ago as it slashed the mobile business it had bought from Nokia in 2014-a purchase that led to a $7.6 billion write-off.

"We will support those users too", Belfiore wrote.

This sounds like it's coming from a broken record already, but Windows phones are dead.

The mobile operating system has been around since 2000, but in recent years has been squeezed out of the smartphone market by Apple's iOS and Google's Android.

In the end, however, Microsoft doesn't need a handset operating system when revenue is far more likely to come from online mobile services such Office 365 and, increasingly, Bing and Cortana.

He said that while Microsoft would support the "many companies" that had adopted the platform, he had switched to Android for the diversity of its apps and hardware.
