Mystery hole found in Antarctica's ice cover as big as West Bengal

Scientists believe the polynya is formed because of the deep water in the Southern Ocean being warmer and saltier than the surface water.

The hole was first discovered in the same location in the 1970s, but scientists' ability to study it was limited at the time.

NASA's Aqua satellite captured this image of a polynya off the coast of Antarctica, near Ross Island and McMurdo Station on November 16, 2011. This is a sea ice feature which basically gives a name to open areas of water that should have normally been covered by ice. The polynya was observed in the same region in the 1970's, then disappeared and appeared on a few weeks back past year. Polynyas are a region of open water surrounded by sea ice.

Despite the fact that the exact reasons for the appearance of polynyas are still unknown, the mechanism of its formation is approximately comprehensible, the N + 1 site specifies. The warm water can keep the ice from reforming, but once it cools, it goes to the bottom, allowing the cycle to continue.

Many experts have said that what actually could have happened is that warm salt water from deep under the ice could have managed to squeeze its way through the colder layer of fresh water thus ultimately melting the layer of ice that covers it.

Fake currency notes act as oxygen to terror funding, says Home Minister
Singh also claimed that India has taken remarkable steps to highlight the menace of terrorism in the worldwide forums. I'm confident that NIA will maintain its credibility & professionalism.

'The Southern Ocean is strongly stratified, ' says Professor Dr Mojib Latif, head of the Research Division at GEOMAR. "This is like opening a pressure relief valve-the ocean then releases a surplus of heat to the atmosphere for several consecutive winters until the heat reservoir is exhausted", Latif said.

"Two of these events happening two years in a row really isn't a long enough kind of trend for us to say it's the result of global warming", Moore told CBC.

Still, it's unclear how often the Weddell Polynya re-emerges, and how long it will linger now that it's opened back up.

Meanwhile, as stated in the Earther, another team from the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research in Kiel, Germany assumes that the reoccurrence of the hole confirms their climate variability models, which also predicts that polynya may appear again.

'The better we understand these natural processes, the better we can identify the anthropogenic impact on the climate system'.
