New wave of Rohingya refugees flock to Bangladesh camps

As many as 15,000 new Rohingya refugees entered Bangladesh since Sunday, U.N. officials said Tuesday, as new satellite imagery showed "tens of thousands of structures, primarily homes inhabited by ethnic Rohingya Muslims" had been burned in Myanmar's Rakhine state.

The organisation said the images reveal that at least 288 villages have been partially or totally destroyed by fire in northern Rakhine State in Myanmar since the 25th August 2017 - when the latest wave of violence against the minority began. "Others said they didn't know what happened to their parents, and they came to Bangladesh with relatives".

About 582,000 Rohingya refugees have crossed into Bangladesh since late August, the United Nations and global humanitarian agencies reported.

"The majority of them said they lost one or both parents in the violence in Rakhine", Pritam Kumar Chowdhury, a department deputy director, told AFP.

"Every minute counts given the fragile condition they're arriving in", said Mahecic.

On Tuesday, global aid agencies sharply revised upward their overall estimate for the number of Rohingya refugees who have fled to southeastern Bangladesh amid a cycle of violence in Rakhine that broke out on August 25. Several said that they were stopped by Bangladeshi border guards and spent the night in muddy rice fields.

Myanmar denies citizenship to the Rohingyas, considering them illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, and imposes multiple restrictions on them, including restrictions on their movement.

Rushanara Ali, Labour MP for Bethnal Green and Bow, on Tuesday called for the British Parliament to support the UNHCR statement that termed the treatment of the Rohingya by Myanmar military as a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

"Maybe U.N. Security Council members can raise this matter for it to be made a resolution so that finally when the Rohingya return, there is a U.N. monitoring team there in place", he said. "It is vital that Members of this Parliament, which is seen as a beacon of democracy in the world, send a powerful message today that we will stand with the people being persecuted, the Rohingya population and other minorities in Myanmar", Rushanara added.

The western region descended into chaos when Rohingya militants attacked Myanmar police posts on Aug 25, triggering the brutal military crackdown. "All of them need the lifesaving basics - shelter, food, water, vaccinations, protection - not tomorrow or next week or next month, but right now", she said.
