Pakistan Tells US Its Military Solution Has Failed In Afghanistan

Foreign minister Khawaja Asif has said on Wednesday that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz's government is not dependent on support of the United States to lead Pakistan like governments of the past. Without elaborating any further, he said there are other countries in the region who are also stakeholder in Afghanistan, and the U.S. should ask them to play a role in resolving the Afghan issue.

Afghanistan's role as a facilitator for India is not acceptable to Pakistan, said Asif.

After wrapping up his first trip to the region, Tillerson said his goal had been to expand on Trump's new policy and what role is envisioned for each country. "We're going to chart our course consistent with what Pakistan not just says they do, but what they actually do".

On Wednesday, Asif briefed the lower house parliament on talks with the USA delegation, describing them as "frank" and held in a "cordial" atmosphere without an exchange of allegations.

The minister said Pakistan cut off several contacts with the United States following its revised policy.

Asif said that Pakistan has told Americans to allow their policymakers, and not their military leaders, to devise Afghanistan policy as military solution has failed and a political solution is needed.

"And with no cap on student visas, we continue to attract the best and brightest students to our world class universities - 160,000 Indian students over the past ten years", Field said.

"We probably listened 80 percent of the time and we talked 20 percent", Tillerson said.

"Yes, there is a trust deficit, but we are talking", Asif said, adding that there was a willingness on both sides to bridge this deficit.

He said that the former commissioner used a calculated move to flee to the United States to announce her exit from the electoral commission.

The role of those countries has become indispensable as far as solving the Afghan conflict, he added.

He said that almost 45 per cent of Afghanistan's territory was under Daesh control, adding that terrorists would not need Pakistan for their hideouts as they have ample space available in Afghanistan.

Asif though hit back by saying that despite not being a fully developed country, Pakistan has achieved a high degree of success in fighting terrorism. "Nearly 40 per cent of Afghan territory is now under the direct control of the Taliban", the Foreign Minister added.

Tillerson, who had flown in from Pakistan, told Islamabad that it must step up its efforts to eliminate militants and terrorist havens operating within the country.

Earlier, in an interview with BBC, Asif said that there is a "huge trust deficit" between Pakistan and the U.S. over the Afghan conflict.

"We do not get any military hardware from them [the U.S.]".

Asif also mentioned that Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed's name was not on the list of 75 militants the U.S. had handed over to Pakistan. He said that normal security given to Tillerson during his visit to Pakistan reflects we have restored peace after rendering numerous sacrifices which the United States should acknowledge.

USA officials have long accused Pakistan of turning a blind eye or assisting the Afghan Taliban and the allied Haqqani network.
