Russian helicopter crashes into the sea near Norway

A helicopter on route from the Russia's settlement of Pyramida to Barentsburg disappeared from radar and crashed according to the Norwegian Coast Guard.

A Russian helicopter with 8 people on board has gone down at sea 2-3 kilometers off the Arctic port of Barentsburg in Svalbard, Norway's rescue service said Thursday.

"We will turn to our Russian counterparts for help in conducting the rescue operation", he said. "The helicopter belongs to our company". The helicopter has not been detected yet and the fate of the people on board is still unclear.

Norway has sovereignty over Svalbard but Russian Federation has a small coal-mining community in Barentsburg.

The helicopter went missing at 15:35 local time (13:35 GMT). The air incident was confirmed ten minutes later.

Tore Hongset, the leader of the rescue coordination operation, told Norwegian television, "We have a rescue operation ongoing. We don't know if it was a controlled landing", an emergency services spokesman told AFP.

It said the eight people aboard were five crew members and three staff members from Russia's national Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute.

"The helicopter is technically fit and was regularly checked [before flights]", the airline said, adding that "the machine was not old", but did not specify its production year.
