Singapore Will Stop Adding New Cars to Its Roads in 2018

Singapore authorities on Tuesday announced they will freeze the number of vehicles on its roads from February 2018, the media reported.

For context, Singapore has a population of around 5.6 million crammed into 719.1 square kilometres of land.

The number available depends on the number of vehicles that are deregistered.

Currently, 12 per cent of Singapore's total land area is taken up by roads, the LTA said.

From February 2013 to January 2015, the growth rate was 0.5% per annum.

He was placed on electric ankle monitoring and surrendered his passport as a condition of making bond the next day. Wesley Mathews reportedly waited until after sunrise before reporting Sherin's disappearance to the police.

Right now, if you live in Singapore and want a vehicle, you have to buy a permit that allows you to own a auto, the least expensive of which costs more than $41,000 Singapore dollars, which works out to a little less than $39,000 Canadian dollars. After that date, apparently, one existing auto will need to be retired from service before a new vehicle will be allowed on the roadways.

Goods vehicles and buses, which are category C vehicles, will see their growth rate kept at 0.25 per cent per annum until the first quarter of 2021. There are about 600,000 vehicles on the road in the city at present. Valid for 10 years, the average cost of the certificate is Sg$50,000, making Singapore one of the most expensive countries to buy a vehicle.

Dubbed as the cleanest and the most expensive city in the world, past year the officials counted at least 600,000 cars on its roads. For example, right now Singapore's target allows for a 0.25% increase in cars with reference to the December 2016 figure, when there were 601,218 cars across two categories (pdf), by engine size. According to the LTA, the government will be investing $20 billion in new rail infrastructure, another $4 billion to renew, upgrade, and expand rail operating assets, and yet another $4 billion in bus contracting subsidies.

The zero growth approach for vehicles is bolstered by continued investment in Singapore's public transit projects. A auto in Singapore can cost four times as much as in the U.S.
