Trump threatens to challenge media's broadcast licenses

The tweet, posted at 9:55 a.m. ET, came after NBC News broke a story that Trump had asked for a "nearly tenfold increase in the USA nuclear arsenal" at the same July 20 meeting where Secretary of State Rex Tillerson reportedly called Trump a "moron". "Bad for Country!", Mr Trump tweeted early Wednesday, US time.

Trump said NBC News was "fake news" after the broadcaster reported tension between the president and US Secretary of State Rex Rex Tillerson. 'Pure fiction, made up to demean.

"The president's threat against NBC and other media outlets is far from empty", Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) said in a statement released today.

Although US presidents have modernised weapon stockpiles over the years, any meaningful addition to the nuclear arsenal would violate treaty agreements.

Trump lashed out at NBC News over a report indicating that he'd called for a drastic expansion of the US nuclear arsenal.

After the briefing, the secretary of state is alleged to have called Trump a "moron", although Rex Tillerson's spokeswoman has denied that allegation. U.S. news reports have painted the relationship between Trump and Tillerson as tense.

In the past week, Trump has called The New York Times "failing", said ESPN's ratings have "tanked" and posted a video that began with: "What the fake news media will not show you in Puerto Rico".

One death in Northern California from wildfire
The Tubbs fire broke out near the northern end of the city, forcing the evacuations of hundreds of homes as well as two hospitals. Biermann says the fires had burned more than 68 square miles (176sq. kilometers). "Trees were ablaze like lights", she said.

In February, Trump said he was going to build up the USA nuclear arsenal to ensure it is at the "top of the pack", and said the US has fallen behind in its atomic weapons capacity.

During the race for the White House and again in March, Trump suggested that it might be worth loosening libel laws in order to make it easier for people to challenge inaccurate stories, Bloomberg News reported.

As it turns out, Trump's comment on NBC was one more inaccurate tweet.

During an address to the United Nations General Assembly in September, Mr Trump declared that the USA would "totally destroy North Korea" if forced to defend itself or its allies.

The FCC does not license the TV or radio networks, but rather individual broadcast stations, according to its online policy manual.

By saying he wants to modernize the nuclear force, Trump is referring to moving ahead with a plan he inherited from the Obama administration to develop, build and field new submarines armed with nuclear missiles; new nuclear-capable bomber aircraft and a new fleet of land-based intercontinental ballistic missiles.
