What the East Coast Should Expect From Hurricane Maria

At 480 miles east-southeast of Bermuda, Lee is no threat to land, but notable for forming September 14, dissipating, and then reforming Friday.

The National Hurricane Center said at its 11 a.m. advisory that Lee has powered up to 115 miles per hour, making it a Category 3 storm and the fifth tropical cyclone this season to earn the title of major hurricane.

More than 200 visitors have left an island on North Carolina's Outer Banks after an evacuation was ordered as Hurricane Maria moves northward.

Hurricane Maria is on its way across the North Atlantic and could hit the United Kingdom at the weekend, forecasters have warned.

The hurricane center thinks that Maria will then turn more to the north by late Saturday, and that path would keep it away from the continental U.S.

Lee is forecast to remain a hurricane over the next several days and could get a bit stronger, but will pose no threat to land as a tropical cyclone.

And Maria is expected to lose some of its punch soon.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect in North Carolina from Cape Lookout to Duck along the Outer Banks and for Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

The Met Office said the potential effects will be "far from those experienced in the Caribbean", but added that weather systems like Maria can bring very strong winds and heavy rain. Up to 2 inches (5 centimeters) of rain could fall through Wednesday.

Tropical Storm Maria will head eastward and away from the USA today.

Those waves could cause risky surf and rip currents along the coast for the next few days.
