American woman wins NYC Marathon for first time in 40 years

"It's indescribable", Flanagan, 36, said of her win.

Marblehead native Shalane Flanagan won the New York City Marathon on Sunday, becoming the first American woman in 40 years to accomplish that feat.

The 2017 event was held just five days after a deadly Manhattan truck attack that left eight people dead.

Flanagan, the 2010 NY marathon runner-up, was sixth in last year's Rio Olympic marathon. She placed second in her debut in 2010.

American running great and 2009 NY victor Meb Keflezighi completed his 26th and final marathon, collapsing as he crossed the finish. Police had promised an unprecedented effort to secure the course, a plan including hundreds of extra uniformed patrol and plainclothes officers, roving teams of counterterrorism commandos armed with heavy weapons, bomb-sniffing dogs and rooftop snipers.

The thought of a marathon attack hits home for Flanagan, a MA native who finished the 2013 Boston Marathon shortly before a bomb near the finish line killed three and wounded more than 260 others.

Kipsang, the 2014 NY champion, was three seconds back with Ethiopia's Lelisa Desisa third in 2:11:32. "I thought of that when I began to feel the pain".

Behind her, but fading fast, Mary Keitany was chasing history, too: The 35-year-old Kenyan had won this race three times in a row.

In the men's race, Geoffrey Kamworwor of Kenya took first, his unofficial time clocking in at 2:10:53.

Kamworor was also in the 2014 Berlin Marathon field that saw compatriot Dennis Kimetto breaking the world record in 2:02:57. The diminutive fitness nut has organized a number of pop-up 5k races for fans in conjunction with his standup tours, but this will be his first marathon.

Among celebrities in the race, Kevin Hart had the best request.

"I got little legs, but a big heart", he said in his marathon announcement.
