Apple HomePod Speaker Delayed, Will Miss Holiday Shopping Season

Apple has told CNBC it has delayed its HomePod smart speaker until "early 2018" as it's not quite ready yet. Apple is pushing HomePod's release to 2018.

The Siri-backed smart speaker, which Apple unveiled in June, was supposed to make its in December, but as we learned today, that will not be happening.

HomePod is Apple's answer to Amazon Echo and Google Home. We'll start shipping in the USA, United Kingdom and Australia in early 2018.

Apple now says it needs more time to flawless the speaker's technology. Amazon's Echo line starts at $50.

Will you wait for HomePod to arrive?

This really isn't too big of a delay - Apple had planned on rolling out HomePod speakers to customers this December, same as Google still plans to do with its beefed-up Home Max speaker, which is now slated to arrive on doorsteps and store shelves next month. With a device like a smart speaker, which packages not only music but voice control and home automation into a single device, there's no shortage of places where hold-ups could be introduced. Apple said it can detect where its located in a room and adjust its sound accordingly. It connects to Apple Music wirelessly through Wi-Fi and to other Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV, through AirPlay 2.

In a statement to TechCrunch the company said... You can stream other services to it from a smartphone, but not with Siri.
