Black Friday Sets Gun Background Check Request Record

Black Friday Sets Gun Background Check Request Record

New records for guns sales on Black Fridays in 2016, 2015, 2014, and 2012. That increase in sales wasn't just evident with people getting deals on Fitbits, Tamagotchis, and Nintendo games: Gun retailers also saw a huge jump in sales.

The FBI was flooded Friday with more than 200,000 background check requests for gun purchases, setting a new single day record, the bureau reported Saturday.

More than 200,000 background check requests were submitted to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System across the country this Friday, USA Today reported, breaking the previous record of 185,713 requests made on the same holiday shopping day a year ago.

That makes three straight years of record high gun checks on Black Friday.

Prospective gun owners filed 203,086 requests to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS).

The database is meant to prevent criminals and other Americans barred from owning guns from purchasing them.

Pakistan capital tense as military silent on protests
Numerous supporters are from ultra-conservative Tehreek-e-Labaik party, who accuse Law Minister Zahid Hamid of blasphemy. The protesters blocked roads and demonstrated at the Numaish traffic intersection in the city's busy Saddar area.

They did not indicate what may have caused the uptick in sales.

The actual number of guns is poised to be even higher: gun checks, which are federally mandated for gun purchases, are run on a single buyer and not the individual guns purchased.

Following the shooting, the Air Force acknowledged it had not provided the Federal Bureau of Investigation with details of the court martial, which likely would have blocked the 2016 sale of the murder weapon to Devin Kelley.

Gun demand rose as President Barack Obama called for tougher regulations after major shootings and then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton led in many election polls.

Donald Trump's pro-gun presidency has contributed to a slowdown in sales this year.
