Broadcom may offer more than $100 billion for Qualcomm

Broadcom, meanwhile, announced it would return its corporate headquarters to the US, in San Jose.

- Broadcom is considering making a takeover offer for Qualcomm that would value the chipmaker at more than $100 billion, Bloomberg reported on November 3, citing people familiar with the matter.

Dow Jones reported Broadcom plans to make a bid for Qualcomm as early as this weekend.

At the company's 4G/5G Summit taking place in Hong Kong, Qualcomm has announced the first successful test of a 5G data connection on its 5G modem chip-set for mobile devices - the X50.

With the introduction of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple brought in Intel for its LTE chips and there have been rumors that the iPhone manufacturer might also bring in MediaTek to bring an end to the business relationship with Qualcomm.

Broadcom's Wi-Fi chips are essentially a commodity and priced much lower than the modem chips. Before Friday, its shares had slumped 16 percent this year, compared with a 41 percent surge in the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index. The offer of about $70 a share would include cash and stock and is likely to be made in the coming days, the people said. No concrete decisions on the matter have yet been reached and it's now unclear what conditions would the semiconductor company be prepared to offer to Qualcomm and what level of a bid would the San Diego, California-based tech giant be prepared to consider. Shares of NXP fell 2 percent and Brocade slipped 2.6 percent. Even though Qualcomm's component is considered to be the best, Apple is trying to get back at the company for various patent and legal issues. Qualcomm is in the process of acquiring NXP, a process held up by legal snags and activist investor pushes for a higher bid.

"These companies are leaders in those areas but there are other companies supplying them", said Lineback, who added that asset sales in those areas, if needed to address antitrust concerns, would not affect the value of the deal.
