DC Comics fires Superman editor Eddie Berganza following sexual misconduct allegations

Eddie Berganza, a high-ranking editor at DC Comics, was sacked Monday following a BuzzFeed News report detailing years of sexual harassment allegations against him. He now oversees editing of the Superman and Green Lantern titles, as well as the current Dark Nights: Metal event.

Among the stories recounted in the BuzzFeed article is Liz Gehrlein Marsham's account that, within weeks of being hired as an editor at DC Comics, Berganza forcibly kissed her and attempted to grope her at a bar near DC's former New York City offices. The company issued a statement Monday afternoon saying Berganza has been fired.

Within comics culture, Berganza's alleged behavior has for years been an open secret, the subject of blunt gossip and open speculation. It was announced by Buzzfeed that Eddie Berganza has been fired in the wake of the allegations becoming public.

Fellow editor at DC Joan Hilty said Berganza "grabbed her and repeatedly tried to pull her in for a kiss" in the early 2000s.

In 2016, when DC fired popular veteran Vertigo editor Shelly Bond, the comics community teemed with anger, questioning why capable women were being fired when Berganza, a rumored serial harasser, was allowed to remain. When Berganza was promoted to Executive Editor - despite multiple complaints to DC's human resources department, as the article relates, and Marsham expressing her discomfort to DC Comics Editor-in-Chief Bob Harras - she moved away from working in editorial completely, rather than continue working under Berganza.

You don't need me to tell you that the male-dominated comic book world has long ignored, abused, and generally mistreated many women who have dared to speak out in the industry. even just creatively. He was named executive editor later that year.

BuzzFeed on Friday published a lengthy examination of the comic book editor who has shepherded such high-profile properties as Superman and Wonder Woman - comic book characters that would leap to the entertainment mainstream through movies and television shows. Eventually she and all of the other women involved in the group complaint left DC. The statement added that DC Comics was "committed to eradicating harassment".

DC Comics launched a review and suspended Berganza on Saturday before firing him today.
