Saudis, allies discuss Iran ahead of Arab League meeting

The Arab League held an extraordinary general meeting on Sunday in Cairo at the request of Saudi Arabia, which called the ministerial-level session to discuss "violations" by its rival Iran.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Jibran Bassil was absent and was instead represented by Lebanon's permanent representative to the Arab League, Antoine Azzam.

Reacting to the emergency meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said, "Unfortunately countries like the Saudi regime are pursuing divisions and creating differences, and because of this they don't see any results other than divisions".

"We are obliged today to take a serious and honest stand.to counter these belligerent policies so that we can protect our security", said Al-Jubeir.

They warned Iran not to interfere in the internal affairs of the region and stressed that Tehran should halt its support for Houthi rebels and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Saudi Arabia has accused Tehran of involvement in the firing of a ballistic missile at Riyadh this month by Yemen's Iran-allied rebels. Iran's backing for militias such as Hezbollah have helped defeat ISIS, but have also greatly expanded Iran's foothold in the region, incurring the wrath of Saudi Arabia.

"The Iranian threats have gone beyond all limits and are pushing the region toward a risky precipice", Abul Gheit added.

A leader in Hariri's Future Movement had earlier told Reuters Hariri would visit Egypt on Monday.

Mr Aoun said he would not accept Mr Hariri's resignation until it is delivered in person amid calls for his speedy return.

While IS no longer controls any urban hub in Iraq, its surviving fighters have regrouped in remote desert areas along the border with Syria and mopping up operations remain to be completed. Both have denied any involvement in the incident. United States weapons drop to terrorists was also caught in camera in Iraq. Syria and Iraq have been alleging these countries for their hand-in-glove role in spreading terrorism in the region.

In what is perhaps the only concrete measure, the ministers said Arab telecommunications satellites would ban Iranian-financed television stations for what they said was their fomenting of sectarian and ethnic tensions and because they posed a threat to Arab security. Senior Lebanese politicians close to Hariri also said he was coerced into resigning.
