Syria plans to join Paris climate change agreement, isolating US

US President Donald Trump, who has expressed doubts that man-made greenhouse gas emissions are the prime cause of global warming, announced in June that he meant to pull out and instead promote US coal and oil industries.

"With Syria's decision, the relentless commitment of the global community to deliver on Paris is more evident than ever", Paula Caballero, director of the climate change program at the World Resources Institute, said.

Meanwhile, AFP reported that United Nations spokesman Nick Nuttall confirmed Syria's signing and clarified that Syria is required to submit ratification documents at the United Nations headquarters based in NY.

While the Obama administration initially signed on to the agreement in December 2015, President Trump voiced plans to leave it this June, claiming that switching over to clean energy will hurt the USA economy. They tweeted that to troll the Americans.

When the pact took effect in 2016, environmental groups and political leaders heralded it as a critical step in trying to reverse man-made ravages on the global environment.

"It is our understanding that the government of Syria announced today their intent to join the Paris Agreement", Nick Nuttall, the spokesman for the United Nations climate body, told AFP. Syria had been the last nation, other than the US, not to be a part of the agreement.

Senate panel grills Equifax, Yahoo execs over recent cyberattacks
But the suspected involvement of Russian agents in its breach shows companies still face a formidable challenge, she said. Mayer testified in front of the Senate Commerce Committee Wednesday regarding two massive data breaches at Yahoo.

On June 2, former Secretary of State John Kerry of the Obama administration called the US withdraw from the Paris agreement "one of the most cynical and frankly ignorant and unsafe, self-destructive steps that I've seen in my entire lifetime in public life".

On Oct. 23, Nicaragua announced it would join the Paris accord, despite its previous reservations.

This makes the United States the only country on the planet not a part of the climate deal.

The U.S. did not set up a pavilion at this year's meeting - the only developed country not to do so, according to Deutsche Welle, a German news agency.

The fact that the second-worst emitter of carbon dioxide in the world (behind only China) is the only one against the agreement clearly reflects poorly on the U.S.as a nation. "While the White House declares war on climate science and retreats from the Paris Agreement, California is doing the opposite and taking action", said California Gov. Edmund G. Brown, Jr., who will be going to the meeting.

The US government on Friday released a report, prepared by hundreds of scientists, on climate change and its primary cause: human activity. El Niño is a powerful natural climate pattern marked by unusually warm water in the tropical Pacific Ocean, which can contribute to higher global temperatures.
