The Bodies of 26 Nigerian Girls Have Been Recovered From Migrant Boats

Italian authorities have commenced an investigation into the deaths of 26 teenage girls whose bodies were discovered in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday.

Their bodies were plucked from the sea on November 5 in one of four separate rescue operations that brought 400 people to the Italian port town of Salerno.

"In 2016 alone, over 11,000 Nigerian women and girls either crossing the African continent or traveling by boat, arrived in Italy, where traffickers are waiting to ensnare and entrap them".

Libya is the biggest launchpad for African migrants hoping to build new lives in Europe. Many from sub-Saharan Africa are running from war and persecution.

Migrants wait to disembark from the Spanish ship "Cantabria" in the harbour of Salerno, Italy. The bodies were placed in coffins, AFP reported.

Twenty-three of the women died on Friday after the inflatable dinghy they were travelling on sank, and their bodies were recovered by the Spanish ship Cantabria, which was operating as part of the European Union anti-trafficking force Sophia. The number who died on that route was 2,639, the IOM says.

A top Salerno official, Salvatore Malfi, called the discovery a tragedy and said police will "need to see whether there are suspects to concentrate on or whether the murder inquiry will proceed against persons unknown", according to Agence France-Presse. "The cause of death appears to be by drowning".

Also citizens of Libyan were on board the warship.

Instead, she said, she stood in sombre protest outside the Central Intelligence Agency with a sign that read, "Not My President". Briskman, who isn't at all a fan of President Trump , couldn't restrain herself from flipping off America's Commander-in-Chief.

According to CNN, 2,839 migrants have died on the Mediterranean route since the beginning of this year.

Nearly 75 per cent of those migrants - about 111,500 people - landed in Italy, and the rest reached the shores of Greece, Cyprus and Spain. The teens are believed to have died while attempting to make a journey from Libya to Europe.

As a result, alternative routes have experienced an uptick of migrant flows.

How many people try to cross the Mediterranean Sea into Italy annually?

Women might endure sexual assault and rape and contract HIV as a result. Perpetrators of sexual violence include security forces, smugglers and men aboard the rescue boats.

About 1,500 Nigerian women and girls made it to Italy in 2014, said Federico Soda, director of IOM's Coordination Office for the Mediterranean.

Twenty-three of the dead women had been on a rubber boat with 64 other people.
