Buhari congratulates George Weah

"We had wanted him to be the captain of the ship but the Liberian people in their "majority" have spoken; so we want to congratulate the winning team and we wish members of the team the best as they steer the affairs of our state".

"On behalf of the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday congratulates Mr George Weah on his election as the next President of the Republic of Liberia".

"Indeed, he has also always impressed me as a focused, patriotic gentleman and a presidential material right from the day I presided over his inauguration as a Member of the Liberian Country Delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament on May 11, 2015".

With this, Weah will serve as the 25th president of Liberia with effect from the third working Monday of January.

Liberia, a nation founded by freed American slaves, is seeing its first democratic transfer of power in more than 70 years as Sirleaf, a Nobel Peace Prize victor, steps down.

The former FIFA World Player of the Year played with AS Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, among others.

Liberia, a nation founded by freed American slaves, is seeing its first democratic transfer of power in more than 70 years as Africa's first female president, Nobel Peace Prize victor Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, steps aside.

"Although we worked so seriously for a different outcome than what [the] results show, my faith, values and principles dictate that I respect the will of the people as announced by the National Elections Commission", Boakai said.

In the country's first democratic transition in more than 70 years - with 98.1 per cent of the vote counted - Mr Weah led with 61.5 per cent to Vice-President Joseph Boakai's 38.5 per cent, National Elections Commission chairman Jerome Korkoyah said on Thursday.

Celebrations have begun in Liberia as former FIFA World Player of the Year George Weah is set to be declared the victor of the West African nation's presidential election.

The tumultuous events of the past seven decades in Liberia, where an estimated 250,000 people died during back-to-back civil wars between 1989 and 2003, have prevented a democratic handover from taking place since 1944.

The 51-year-old Weah, a senator who entered politics after his 2002 retirement from soccer, led the first-round vote in October but didn't receive enough ballots to win outright over the 73-year-old Boakai, who has been vice president for 12 years.
